DJI Remote Controller Guide: RC-N3 vs RC 2 vs RC Pro 2 vs RC Motion 3 — Compatibility and Which to Buy
DJI's controller naming is confusing: RC-N1, N2, N3, RC, RC 2, RC Pro, RC Pro 2, Motion 2, Motion 3. This guide maps each controller to the drones it supports and tells you when it is worth paying for a screen.
Controller families, explained
| Controller | Type | Transmission | Works with (current models) | Dealer price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DJI RC-N3 | Phone holder | O4 | Mini 5 Pro, Air 3S, Flip, Neo, Neo 2, Lito 1 / X1 (CA) | $74.25 |
| DJI RC 2 | 5.5" screen | O4 | Mini 4 Pro, Mini 5 Pro, Air 3, Air 3S, Flip, Neo, Neo 2, Avata 2, Avata 360, Lito X1 (CA) | $231.75 |
| DJI RC | 5.5" screen | O3 | Mini 3, Mini 3 Pro, Air 2S, Mavic 3 series | $207.03 |
| DJI RC Pro | 5.5" 1000-nit screen, HDMI | O3+ | Mavic 3 Pro / Classic, Air 2S, Mini 3 Pro | $642.53 |
| DJI RC Pro 2 | 7" 1200-nit rotating screen, dual HDMI | O4+ / O3 Pro | Mavic 4 Pro | $819.18 |
| DJI RC Motion 3 | Motion / one-hand | O4 | Avata 2, Avata 360, Neo, Neo 2 (with Goggles 3 / N3) | $64.78 |
| DJI RC Motion 2 | Motion / one-hand | O3/O4 | Avata, Avata 2, Air 3 (with goggles) | $179.25 |
Compatibility follows DJI's published lists at the time of writing; firmware updates occasionally add aircraft. Enterprise aircraft use the RC Plus and RC Plus 2, which are quoted with the aircraft.
Phone-holder vs screen controller
Phone-holder controllers (RC-N series) are lighter and cheaper, and your phone's large display is excellent — until it overheats in summer, a call interrupts your flight, or you cannot see the screen in sunlight. Screen controllers (RC 2, RC Pro 2) fix all three problems and start in seconds. For anyone flying weekly, the RC 2 is our default recommendation; for paid work, the brighter and larger RC Pro 2 with HDMI output for a client monitor is the professional choice.
Buying a controller separately
Three common cases:
- Upgrading from RC-N3 to RC 2: the RC 2 at $231.75 pairs with any of the O4 aircraft above; the RC-N3 becomes a spare.
- Replacing a lost or damaged controller: match the transmission generation (O2/O3/O4) to your aircraft first.
- Fleet standardisation: schools and content teams often buy aircraft-only bundles and add RC 2 units so every pilot has a screen; volume pricing applies from five units.
FPV control
The DJI Avata 2 and DJI Avata 360 are sold in Fly More combos with the RC Motion 3 and Goggles 3 — the intuitive point-and-fly experience most beginners want. Add the FPV Remote Controller 3 if you intend to learn manual (acro) mode. The DJI Neo 2 Motion Fly More Combo brings the same goggles-and-motion experience to a 160 g aircraft.
Notes for US buyers
All controllers listed are FCC-authorized as of September 2026. Aircraft marked "(CA)" — the Lito 1 and Lito X1 — are Canada-only; see our FCC status guide. Controllers ship from ASI Computer to US and Canadian addresses with full DJI warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a DJI RC 2 with an older drone like the Mini 3 or Air 2S?
No. The RC 2 uses O4 transmission and pairs with O4/O3 aircraft such as the Mini 4 Pro, Mini 5 Pro, Air 3, Air 3S, Flip, Neo, Neo 2 and Avata 2/360. Older O2/O3 drones use the DJI RC or RC-N1/RC-N2.
Is the RC 2 worth it over the RC-N3?
If you fly more than occasionally, yes. A built-in 5.5-inch 700-nit screen means no phone overheating, no notifications, faster start-up and better visibility in sunlight. It costs more up front but is the more popular bundle among our customers.
Which drones does the RC Pro 2 support?
The RC Pro 2 is designed for the Mavic 4 Pro and is bundled in the 512GB Creator Combo. Check DJI's compatibility page for firmware updates that add further aircraft.
Do I need a Motion controller for FPV?
Not necessarily. The Avata 2 and Avata 360 can be flown with the RC Motion 3 (immersive, one-handed) or with the FPV Remote Controller 3 (traditional sticks, needed for manual mode). The Neo 2 also supports the Motion 3 with goggles.
